About me

REX MAKEMSON

Rex Makemson, a seasoned dog trainer and behaviourist, has dedicated the last two decades of his
life to understanding and nurturing the bond between humans and their canine companions. Based
in Dersingham, Norfolk, England, Rex’s journey into the world of dog training began in 2002, a
turning point that transformed his personal challenges into a life filled with purpose and passion.

After experiencing personal hardships, including the dissolution of his marriage, Rex found solace and companionship in Misty, his loyal dog. Their bond became the catalyst for a new chapter in Rex’s life. Unimpressed by the traditional training methods he encountered, which often relied on dominance rather than mutual respect, Rex sought a better way. This determination led him to the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, where he honed his skills and earned professional accreditation.
In 2003, Rex established Paws Obedience Training, a community-focused dog training school that operated in Dersingham and nearby Norfolk villages such as Rudham and Hunstanton. Over the years, his empathetic approach and commitment to positive reinforcement have earned him a reputation as a trusted expert in canine behaviour. Rex’s training philosophy emphasizes understanding each dog’s unique needs, fostering a relationship built on trust, and creating a harmonious partnership between dog and owner.
Rex’s career highlights include transforming the lives of countless dogs and their families. His methods have helped address behavioural challenges ranging from aggression to anxiety, empowering dog owners to build stronger, more positive relationships with their pets. Beyond obedience training, Rex has a special interest in therapy dogs and has been an advocate for their role in providing emotional support to those in need. Misty herself became a therapy dog, showcasing her impact of Rex’s training methods.
His hands-on work aside, Rex is an accomplished author. His book, The Life of Rex, blends personal anecdotes with professional insights, offering readers a heartfelt glimpse into the world of dog training through the eyes of his beloved companions, Misty and Charlie. The book celebrates the unbreakable bond between humans and dogs and highlights the importance of empathy, patience, and understanding in fostering that connection.
Now retired from active training, Rex reflects on a career filled with joy, challenges, and unforgettable moments. Though his cherished companions Misty and Charlie have passed on, their memory continues to inspire his advocacy for humane and effective dog training. Living a quiet life in Norfolk, Rex remains a source of wisdom and inspiration to those seeking to deepen their understanding of the human-canine bond.
